The guy does "3" each time resting his stomach on the mat
I think these are better. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X79LlPDmpOM&feature=related
We still do these push ups. 50 to 200. To answer your question, yes, they are good for both Aikido and MMA ~ My son Rik Ellis does both..They make both your wrists and forearms strong.

I do the same push-ups that Henry mentioned. The first time i tried to do one I just flopped on my belly, I thought there was no way I'm ever going to be able to do them... It's funny though after no time at all how quickly you can build up, once you can do one, it's quite easy to push on and do more.
I've also seen them done where you rotate your left hand clockwise so that your fingers are pointing outwards at 9 o'clock, and you rotate your right hand anti-clockwise so that your fingers are pointing outwards at 3 o'clock, and with the back of the hands touching the floor (hope this makes sense).
I can't do these yet...

You can also try doing them with your hands behind your back.

It appears to be a broken link Henry.

Push-ups with my hands behind my back???? Sounds difficult, I'm not sure i follow this technique?!? Does it require a large dose of viagra? :)

Sorry, I had not realised the link was broken...This link is from my video site `Aikido Ellis Video`......

It has been my intention to make another video showing all the exercises. When in the raised position it is good without the use of viagra :) to have another student sit on your back............Also..
Sit on the mat, place your hands behind you, turn the hands palm up, now raise your arris off the mat, try it, you may even enjy it :straightf

For those of you out there wondering what this 'arris' is to raise off the mat, may I provide a little lingustic background:
'arris' is a shortened version of Aristotle (a greek martial artist:D )
Aristotle sounds like 'bottle'
'bottle and glass' is old Cockney rhyming slang for 'arse'
So what Sensei Ellis is saying is, now raise your bottom off the mat!:)

Mark,
No wonder that we are two countries separated by a common language. Wonderful bridge there.

Wow, I tip my hat to the guy performing those push-ups... the one handed stuff definately gives me something to aim for.

Thanks for clearing this up Mark, I'm from "the north" so i'm totally lost with the cockney slang... It's funny that how in such a small country there is such a difference in culture from one end to the other... take for example the notherners greater preference for the opposite sex than the southern fellow :)

Ooh... Dave, I missed this sideways handbag swipe at our soft southern metrosexuality! No problem, we can take it;) , we also know that the northern lass wears the trousers up there and is generally 'harder' than the boys. We've seen how little a Geordie lass can wear in the middle of winter and still keep smiling.:D

I will be making a short video covering all the exercises we do on the backs of the wrists..
1) Standard push-ups on backs of wrists.fingers pointing both in and out.
2) wrists wide apart drawing slowly together until touching wrist to wrist.
3) On backs of wrists with someone sitting on your back.
4) Sitting on arris with hands behind you on backs of wrists and lifting arris ..........

I still do the fingers facing in and do about 30 to 50. But I find the fingers facing out at 9 o clock a bit too hard these days.
I used to be able to do them ok, but I do find them more painful these days, Reckon me age is against me Henry? :p

Only do what you are comfortable with, then they are good for you.
It is no good if you can't play the joanna the next day, is it ?

Do you remember going from a standard press up, clapping the hands and going to the back of wrist, then alternate and then do the reversal of that? Just another combination for fun....!!
Used to but can't bloody do it anymore...:dead:
Can't play joanna..... but would like to.... hee hee!!
