Hi folks,

One statistic that I get asked pretty often is the number of currently active aikido practitioners. Unfortunately, that's a number that's been pretty elusive given the many different affiliations, organizations, and approaches to aikido.

So, knowing that the collective intelligence of the AikiWeb community far outweighs that of my little brain's, I wanted to see if we as a community couldn't come up with a reasonable and reasoned number of currently active aikido practitioners using hard numbers (eg with citations) or statistical inferences (from the number of dojo, etc).

Thoughts?

The RFEJYDA (Real Federacion Espaņola de Judo y deportes asociados) Federation of Judo and related sports has issued last year 2600 licenses for Aikido. But in Spain there are also Aikikai,Traditional Aikido who issues the licenses by the Culture Ministry, Iwama and some more. So I think there must be roughly 4500 Aikido practitioners.

Is there somewhere you could simply look up how many Aikikai Dan ranks there are? That might give some kind of idea. It sounds like a very hard thing to figure out.

UK would be about 12,000 - think there's about 10,000 or so in the BAB so I'm making an assumption 20% aren't in the BAB.

I think France is about 70,000 - that may just be in the two main associations though, Tamura's and Tissier's. Tissier sensei mentioned the number an interview from late last year.

would be hard to verify the independent, sort of those folks who are "off the aikido grid" so to speak.

Hi Jun. A survey was carried out a while ago.

Facts like France being the no.1 in terms of Aikido Practitioners in the world.with 50'000 practitioners, followed by the U.S with Japan in third.
http://www.aikidojournal.com/articleindex?issueID=an95.

It's called demographics and the future of Aikido.

A good read but unfortunately not up to date.

Hello!

Well, I was looking for these numbers as well. A pity though that this thread isn't a little bit more complete.

But as far as Portugal goes, I can say that there are about 1000 practitioners affiliated with FPA (Portuguese Aikido Federation) and then more 300/400 tops non affiliated with it.

So, in Portugal, I'd say there are about 1400 practitioners.

! Sarcasm alert !

Why do I feel if I answer the question, I will get annoying phone calls at dinner time. Sounds tele-calling-esq. Sorry for the puchiness, maybe the old blood sugar is low

So a couple of hundred thousands, perhaps even half a million?

Hi Jun:

How many dojos are listed on Aikiweb? Multiply that number by say 20 and that is one data point. Although many dojos are much larger, many are also small groups of students banding together for practice.

I know of at least a few in my part of the world that are still listed though defunct many years.

The only information I have seen is this;

http://www.aikikai.or.jp/eng/index.htm,

"Transcending boundaries of race and nationality, Aikido is practiced and loved by over 1.2 million people in more than fifty countries around the world."

I don't think that includes people outside of the Aikidai.
