I have offended the religious? I should perhaps tread carefully, then: I know what means they have recourse to when offended by the ideas or words of others; I will certainly watch my back from now on.

I think it is very clear that religious belief retards those who partake in it - indeed, the guilty parties even boast of it: many a time I have heard them speak of the immutability of their bigotry on the grounds that a 'god' sets it forth as an eternal truth.
When this 'god' has decreed such retarded notions as: homosexuals are evil; women are inferior to men; and non-human animals exist for the use of man; and the sun revolves around the earth, it prevents the 'believer' from progressing - in other words: it retards their progress - and gives rise to instances of gross cruelty towards progressives, such as that meted out to Galileo Galilei.
The effect this persecution of a progressive man had on Descartes, for example, is another excellent case of religion retarding those who maintain it, as social and intellectual progress is thus retarded. I could go on and on.

Religion is just prejudice with 'divine authority': you have no more right to such prejudice than a racist, or a Nazi does, and only convention sees you (again: not you specifically) get away with your horrors.
