I know a lot of people like to make fun of seagal, but he has a lot to offer the aikido community. It's kind of a shame he stopped teaching.

Plus, if anybody is going to bust out aikido techniques in the UFC it would be Anderson Silva. He is an excellent fighter.

If you cross train with boxers, grapplers, and other martial artists then Aikido's martial effectiveness is obvious.

Remember Seagal's practice is traditional based Aikido you know the so called Aiki-Bunny wrist grabbing kind? LOL.

So that being said if you practice HARD and strive to do your best Your Aikido will "work"

Having taken Ukemi from Seagal all I can tell you is he is the real deal.

WRT the first part, where on bullshido? A link would be helpful -- I browse through there regularly but must have missed it. That site is so cluttered I often miss stuff, however. No patience on my part I suppose.

Small joint manipulation is fingers and toes. Wrist locks are perfectly legal. To be honest, "there are no techniques in Aikido" thing aside, I think for ring work you need irimi nage, tenchi nage, rokkyo and yonkyo submission and that's about it and they're all perfectly legal.

As an Aikidoist and a professional MMA / Cage fighter, I would say that there is very little Aikido that is illegal in the MMA. All the wrist locks are legal, small joint manipulation is taking one or two digits and bending them back to release your opponents grip, this is illegal, three fingers or more is allowed. Small joint manipulation is not part of Aikido anyway. I have submitted several serious training opponents in ground work with Kotegaesh – Sankyo – Nikkyo – I use irimi tenkan on the cage wall to either turn my opponent into or off the wall.
The Aikido movements in MMA are tighter and not so flowing, but the compact techniques can be very effective.
The way you enter you’re your opponent, using his weight against him to turn him or take him down.
I don’t usually use forums, my father Henry Ellis Sensei asked me to comment on this subject.
Watching the video that started this thread, much of what Seagal Sensei is teaching I believe has a place at some level in MMA, It is also very similar to my own teaching . Silva would not be a part of this if he didn't believe.

MMA - No head butting, eye gouging, fish hooking, attacking the groin, strikes to the back of the head, strikes to the trachea. Those are all part of aikido as I have had done to me, so I'd say a lot of aikido is banned.

Hi Adam

Sorry for the mistake in the link.
It is difficult to pick out techniques when fights are filmed. People look for stylized Aikido as seen in the dojo, the cage and the street are very different places and less accommodating. I always tell students they must `adapt` to the situation they find themselves in.
My father has asked me to make a short video of my application of
Aikido techniques within both fighting and training. I will try to get this done soon. It may surprise you at the reaction from some of the more experienced fighters when a kote gaesh or nykkyo / sankkyo is applied in ground work.
The most difficult transition for me from Aikido to MMA was to stop leading with my forward leg, a gift in MMA.

On behalf of Aikiweb folks, thanks in advance for putting in the effort on this. At my dojo we offer many martial arts with a single monthly payment for all....thus at least 75% of our members cross-train. That being said we sometimes mix up techniques; nikajo from a half guard, kaiten nage to jujigatame from sprawl defense of a shoot, etc. Anyway, very interested in seeing you take on things....I know if you were in our area we'd invite you to do a clinic at one of our seminars.

Chael Sonnen spent four - nearly five - rounds throwing Silva to the floor and beating him up. He never really looked like finishing him though, and with just under two minutes left in the entire fight (the fifth round), after which, Sonnen would have easily won a decision victory, Silva 'slapped on a triangle from the bottom', forcing Sonnen to tap out.

I didn't watch it either Cliff, but it is my understanding Silva was having his (_!_) handed to him the first few rounds, but he came back to win. Although I like Silva, I would like to see him a bit less cocky and a good loss would be good for him I think.
