This kid sounds formidable. The discussion with the young man's BJJ teacher about the cross-over between free style wrestling and BJJ was pretty interesting. As is the discussion of how the different rule sets require different skill sets.
The comments seemed to me, FWIW, to echo a number of discussions folks have had here.

Most martial artists who are into theory but not practice or sport, don't realize that the people who are into application are talking about the same stuff.
Once I got around a bunch of intelligent athletes I was shocked to see that they talk about all the same stuff many of the more esoteric teachers talk about. The only difference is, they are using it on some level.
I think the smart ones play in both sandboxes at some point so that their home turf becomes colored with the grains from each.

A number of our High School BJJ students wrestle. They have no problems with the transition, in fact they improve significantly in both wrestling and BJJ from training in both paradigms.

I still have very fond memories of my more active wrestling days. I try to get aikidoka to wrestle with me all the time. Some do, most don't. Many are simply not comfortable "rolling." I like it.:D
