Hello all,

I was in the Marine Corps, released on a medical discharge. I earned my black belt from John Thurston Sensei while on active duty.

Hey Matt,
Welcome to the forum. Where did you train while AD? There was an aikido school on LeJeune for awhile, and that teacher also had some classes on Camp Fallujah while deployed.

Area 5 gym. I was at Swamp Lagoon from 93-97. I began as a hollywood marine. Thank you for serving Adam. You are a true warrior and champ. Where in Ohio are you? I know some good folks that direction.

Would that stand for St. Louis, MO?

I have a lot of friends and family in St. Louis and whenever I'm back to the States I try to visit.

Matt, do you train aikido in St. Louis currently? If so, what dojo?

Yes I live in the St.Louis area. However, I am not attached to a dojo.

Dave Lowry is out of St. Louis, not sure if he teaches aikido regularly or just does seminars and such.

Matt, I think we might know each other in a roundabout way. Your name seems familiar. Do you train Moo Sul Kwan Hapkido? I used to train with Moo Sul Kwan when I was young. They are a great group of people.

I trained with Dave Lowry for years. He no longer teaches Aikido. He has chosen to limit himself to Shindo Muso Ryu Jodo and Shinkage Ryu (sword).
He is without question the best teacher you could ever find. We have known each and trained together off an on for over 30 years. A true gentleman.

That would be one in the same. He has been doing this for quite some time it seems.

You would think he'd change his name or story at least. Make it a bit of a challenge anyway.... :)

I just read the link on Bullshido, and it is truly hilarious. This clown photoshopped his name into somebody elses Judo certificate, but left the Katakana name of the of the original owner untouched.

Darwin award!

Well it's kind of like how no one in Japan has ever heard of Baskin Robbins. Even though it says Baskin Robbins all anyone sees is サテイワンアイス. Even my girlfriend, who teaches English never noticed the English name of the ubiquitous ice cream shop. Maybe he never thought anyone would care to check the Japanese.

In retrospect the fact that all he really said about his Aikido background was that he earned his black belt was somewhat suspect. Does anyone know of the teacher he mentioned?

Even then he didn't claim a black belt in Aikido - or that he'd even seen a Steven Seagal movie. If these are one and the same people, he's a troubled man, but any sympathy I might have had ran out with his military claims. The Stolen Valor Act may have been ruled unconstitutional, but I still retain the right to shun those who claim military ranks, awards, and status they did not earn. I served with too many fine Marines to accept a fraud.
