How common is it for your tests to include essay requirements for a test, at what rank, and what kinds of questions do you get?

My organization has both Aikikai and Yonshinkan style dojo and they include ronbun starting at least at the shodan level. Many different topics ranging from "Shinken Shobu" and its relation to your personal training to "Aikido History and Future."

We also have written tests for the mudansha...starting off with T/F, A, B, C choice-type questions, then getting into fill in the blank type questions around 3rd-1st kyu.

We have a requirement for all levels from 2nd kyu on, which is "an opportunity for the advancing student to express Aikido principles in a form of their choice." The details are here: http://aikidosd.com/bbproject.htm

It's required for all ranks in our organization. Two pages up through ikkyu, 10+ pages from shodan on.

My dad always says "Strong like bull, smart like pig, stink like goat." Nidan is first essay, topic of one's choosing.

Coincidentally, Goldberg Sensei's blog post today is "Sho-Dan as Rite of Passage" (http://www.goldbergsensei.com/post/450171130/sho-dan-as-rite-of-passage) and includes some thoughts on the project required at our dojo.

I think the AWA posts their essays on their home website somewhere.
