Cleansing Class

It is nearly the new year, and we, and a lot of dojos have a tradition known as cleansing class.
What happens at cleansing class is something we are not allowed to warn new students of before hand :D
It is a lot of fun, and very grueling. Everything is done in sets of 108, (for the sake of shintao traditions.)

If your dojo participates in a yearly cleansing class, how do you guys roll? :cool:

Not sure if it's the same thing, but at Kannagara dojo there used to be a year-end/beginning class which ended with midnight misogi. Now the traditional year-end/beginning jinja activities are in full effect though so I don't believe that happens any more. It sounds like your event is a bit more strenuous than what I recall...unless you count a winter dip in the Pilchuck river as strenuous.:D

Sounds like a blast though...hard to find a river like that in Florida though.

It was great fun! Fortunately I was used to misogi at the time, but it's always interesting to hear the sounds first-timers make. Usually it's the sound of folks trying to catch their breath mixed with some choice swear words while trying to chant...a strangely auspicious thing. :D

We just had our O Soji tonight. About a two hour class consisting of high tempo elements of all the martial arts at our dojo (iaido, aikido, karate, tae kwon do, judo, jujitsu), concluding with 365 shomen giri cuts. This is considered the physical manifestation of O Soji, or great cleaning (in this case also reference dot a cleansing of the spirit through physical activity) and then literally cleaning the dojo. Then pizza, beer, budo dvd's and stories!

We have misogi every New Year's eve -- early in the evening, so people can get on to other activities if they want. It consists of 108 shomenuchi ikkyo suwari waza -- that's 108 as uke and 108 as nage -- with one partner, and then four each with everyone else in the dojo (unless attendance is sparse, and then it's ten each with everyone else). Beer, sake and toshikoshi soba to follow!
