having said that...
what you describe is not as bad as having another person get a toe caught in your hak and they fall and break a bone. happens.

having said that...
what you describe is not as bad as having another person get a toe caught in your hak and they fall and break a bone. happens. I t happened to me a month ago when my instructor threw me my foot got hung up in his hakama and my head went to my chest pulled the muscles real bad in chest I was out 2 weeks.

Not that I am anywhere near ready to wear a hakama, but my understanding was that tripping was pretty common and a necessary part of the training process.

Something about beginner's mind, remembering to be humble, and all that jazz.

Our sempai who lead class will occasionally trip on their hakama, but not really noticeable to me at this point unless they point it out or mention it. I'm certainly not seeing them do it...

I haven't seen anyone trip over their own hakama, but I have seen uke's feet get caught in their hakama and them tripping around trying to keep their balance. One guy wasn't able to stay up and went down. He got up quite gracefully. :)

Happened to me three times, always when I got up for running from a seiza position. But it's not a drama, I just do a foreward roll and continue....

A good friend of mine, and Sandan(maybe yondan now, haven't seen him in awhile) in Yoshinkan Aikido (and the most talented at ukemi-ist I have seen) blew out his hamstring because of a hakama misshap. One of those freak things, but it happens. I tie that bad boy up nice and high (i.e. roll it over my belt in the front)..as much as I can get away with without showing too much skin, or the whites of my pants...;o]

To make notice to Janet and Adam, I recently got caught in our dojo senpai's hakama. Thankfully my hamstrings are fairly stretchy (yay track&field). It inspired me to think of a hakama with black velcro on the outside seam, but inside the garment. So if something gets caught, you rip open the velcro up to 12 or so inches, instead of someone's joint.

It seems odd to me that we are interested in our partner's safety, but this potential hakama situation still exists.

alternatives would be those tiny buttons you find on workout/warmup pants. this might work better than velcro(separate more readily), and be less aesthetically troubling.

I know of no tailors that could make a business out of it, but if i can't buy one when the time comes, i will tailor my own.

Lots of hakama drama with weapons training too. People's tanto getting stuck in the hakama ties, bokken getting snagged on the side vents...

No wonder in the old days people preferred shorter hakamas. Tohei sensei also sported larger side vents although from the documented classic grapple with "Herman" it still got caught and ripped...

getting up from ukemi get foot caught in pantleg - fall back down. oops...
Been wearing the darned thing since 07... (and for a while back in 95-96 when at a dojo where gokyu and up wore hakama).

A story from the old days, before I joined my dojo.

A brand new 3th kyu got his brand new hakama.
During warm-up, they were doing that exercise where you spread your legs and stretch your arm as far as possible to the other side of the body.
The only person that wasn't spreading his legs was the 3th kyu, for which he got a remark.
Turned out that he stepped in one pipe with both legs. :D
