Could someone please explain this phrase to me. I know what it literally translates to but I've read about two different interpretations. The first being that if about having fought to the point where the only option is to surrender, the second being having fought to the point where you've lost all of your weapons but have no intention of surrendering and are willing to fight to the bitter end.

Thanks

Hard to say anything without kanji, not your average everyday expression.

It's 剣折れ矢も尽き. "Sword broken and arrows all spent." My understanding of the phrase is that it's not about what happens then, but about getting to that point, that is using everything available to you in your effort.
