Although I am a student of Saotome Sensei's affiliation, I do not get the chance to train with him very often. I have heard through talks with others who saw him just recently, that he spoke of the three bodies of aikido; the Spiritual Body, the Physical Body, and the Astral (sp?) Body. Can anyone who is closer to him than I am elaborate on this?

I always thought spiritual and astral were interchangeable words.

I am reminded of the Christian tradition of body, soul, and spirit.

Spirit in European thought is originally linked to breath. Maybe Saotome sensei thinks of this as a parallel to ki, which is also linked to breath.

What astral body might mean in relation to Japanese principles, I have no idea :)

The astral body is the electro magnetic field that all beings have. When you hear people talking about "auras" that's what Sensei is talking about.

The spiritual body is your consciousness which connects into the larger universal consciousness which we all share.

I have a saying:

The three pillars of Aikido are

Physical, Energetic, and Spiritual reality.

Each is a source of wisdom
embodying an aspect of the Way.

It's from me new soon-to-be published book.
