Hi everyone,

So far, we've sold 62 tickets! Thanks to everyone who has supported the fund for Mary Heiny sensei's upcoming hip surgery by purchasing raffle tickets.

I'd like to point out, of course, that there are over 70 prizes in the raffle -- which means that, so far, every ticket is a winning ticket!

Don't forget that every single raffle ticket matters -- both in your chances to win a prize, but also, and more importantly, to support Mary Heiny sensei's upcoming hip surgery.

Hi everyone,

We've sold 131 tickets as of this morning!

But, I think we can do better. So, taking a cue from NPR, I'd like to set a goal that I truly believe we can reach.

I would like to see us all get together to reach the goal of 500 tickets sold by this weekend. This sets the bar pretty high, but I truly believe we can do it!

Each and every single ticket that you purchase helps support Mary Heiny sensei's upcoming hip surgery. So, whether you're buying a single ticket for a chance to win one of the over 70 great prizes or if you're purchasing a large block of tickets to sell at your dojo, every ticket counts!

Please help get us towards selling 500 tickets!

If you could choose, which of the 70+ prizes would you want to win in the upcoming AikiWeb Raffle?
Will winners have a choice of prizes or are they are awarded randomly? What are the options when someone wins a prize (like a dojo membership) that they cannot or do not want to use? Can people arrange a prize exchange with another winner or otherwise transfer such prizes?

The prizes will be drawn randomly.
What are the options when someone wins a prize (like a dojo membership) that they cannot or do not want to use? Can people arrange a prize exchange with another winner or otherwise transfer such prizes?Such exchanges would be perfectly fine as would the winner's presenting the prize as a gift to someone else. The exchanges and such would be done personally (ie on their own).

Hope that helps clarify,

Tickets purchased! The prizes are all great...I'd be less-interested in the training/membership prizes, though, simply because I'm not at a point in my life where I can travel freely.

Incidentally, our dojo held a benefit for Mary Heiny Sensi on April 20th, and there is a basket for donations on the front counter.

Good stuff. Kudos to the entire Aikido community for stepping up.

I'll second Aaron - the prizes are all great.

Oh, to heck with it - I want the iaito, anything from Mugendo Budogu, anything from Bujin, Terry Dobson's DVD, George Ledyard's DVD's, the first-edition books, the handmade weapons (sorry Jennifer ;) ), Janet Rosen's weapon bag...

Ok, I feel better. Back to lurking :D

Hi Jun,
I'm not sure how important the April 30th deadline is, but our esteemed government is rebating us tax money (must be an election year) and a good number of people won't get their direct deposit rebates until May 16th. I just wondered if the deadline could be pushed back to cover this time period? Say May 20th? I don't know if there's any possibility that you would get all that many more tickets purchased either. Just a thought I had.

Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark,

That's an interesting thought. So, I'd like to ask the people here:

How willing would people be to commit to purchasing raffle tickets if we extend the deadline until May 20th, taking in account the tax rebate that many in the US will be receiving?

The AikiWeb Raffle to Mary Heiny sensei's hip surgery is now complete! We raised $4,325.60 through ticket sales (448 tickets minus PayPal fees), but I'm going to go ahead and bump it up to a nice even:~~~ *** !!! $4,500 !!! *** ~~~
Thank you to everyone who participated in the raffle, both by donating items as well as purchasing tickets!

All of the names should be unique to individual ticket holders with additional letters provided for the last names (such as yours) to disambiguate.

(You're welcome!)

I just want to second everyone else on thanking Jun for the great job he has done, and also to the generous folks who donated things to be raffled. You guys and gals are awesome!

Now if you'll excuse me I think I need to go play the lottery now. I've never won anything in a raffle before, ever, and then wow! I must have stumbled into someone else's lucky feng shui stream!

*back to doing the Snoopy Happy Dance!*

:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Next time I see Larry Wall (which would also be the the first), I'm having a serious discussion with him about the obvious deficiencies of Perl's random numbers generator :D

All kidding aside - congrats to the winners, and thanks to Jun and everyone who donated!

As an aside, a friend of mine used to teach Larry Wall aikido. No, really!

That' why I didn't participate. Everything's far from Florida.:) I chose to just send her a check, but I still think that the raffle was an awesome idea. Great job, Jun.

You might want to contact the donor to see if they're willing to transfer the gift to someone else. Might you know someone in the Norfolk area who might enjoy the prize?

Great job. Do I get to hit Mark with the bokuto first ?

The Aikido community really came together nicely under Jun.

Really nice job.

I think anyone who's used perl for working with encryption algorithms already knows about the [not-so-]random numbers. :D

I just assumed that people who won 3 or 4 items must have purchased 20 tickets each...

No, wait. I think we'll come up there sometime in June. :)

Hey I did suggest the ol pen and paper thing, but noooo someone had to get his geek on! :p

And yes, a couple extra tickets were an early Mother's Day gift. I decided that was more worthwhile than another box of Godiva, and definitely easier on my waistline! ;)

I just want to add my thanks for Organising this raffle.

The fact that I won something that I can actually claim was also pretty cool.

As is the amount that was raised!

I anticipated this problem -
Not only did I agree to transfer the prize to someone more local, I also have arranged to trade some aikido related dvds as a more "sendable" prize. Hopefully others in this situation can also work something out.

Glad to hear all that we were able to raise for Mary. Thanks to all who participated, and of course to Jun!!

Hi folks,

Just a quick update. I received a check for an additional $100 to be included in the raffle donation, so that brings the total up to $4,600!

I am currently awaiting the bank transfer from PayPal. As soon as it clears, I'll be sending the check to the fund to help Mary Heiny sensei's upcoming hip surgery. I'll keep everyone informed.

Best,

Hi folks,

I just wanted to let everyone know that I have sent the cashiers check for $4,600 to the Friends of Mary Heiny (http://www.friendsofmaryheiny.org/) fund.

I want to take a moment here to thank all of the folks who generously donated the 80 prizes as well as all of you who purchased one of the almost 450 tickets. Seeing the worldwide aikido community come together -- across organizational, stylistic, and geographic borders -- to participate in this raffle was a pleasure for me. I feel proud to be a part of this aikido community of ours!

So, thank you, everyone!

Does that mean that the raffle money hasn't been included yet in the current total on their site? If so that means the 30k goal has been met! Woohoo! :) :) :)

Jun and the entire AikiWeb community,

Again, let me offer a most heartfelt thank you for all your generosity in organizing, donating prizes, and buying raffle tickets. We received the check yesterday and it will shortly be used for hip parts and rehab.

Mary Sensei managed to get through her last pre-surgery seminar this past weekend. She was in good spirits but quite uncomfortable so this fundraising has happened none too soon. There was much speculation on how far we will fly when she can really move again!

My very best to all of you.

Garth

Hi Everybody,

Here is a thank you from Mary Heiny Sensei:

To Jun Akiyama, and all the donors, organizers and participants in the aikiweb raffle I wish to express my most sincere and heartfelt thank you. Frankly, I am flabbergasted at how many items were
offered, how many tickets purchased and how much money was raised.

The gratitude I feel towards all of you and all of the others who have expressed such generous caring is difficult to express. It feels to me like a wave moving out from my heart to each of you, carrying not only a thank you but a wish that each of is never without the support of your community. May you all have health, prosperity, loving community and mind blowing irimi nages.
