For those interested in the subject. You might find the following link an interesting read.

CPT Smith was an American Army Officer who went to Japan to study Jiujitsu. You might say he was the father of modern jiujitsu in the American Military. Certainly one of the first westerners to attempt to learn and codify it.

This is a read from his 1918 publication concerning jiujitsu.

I found his explainations of Center, Hara, or "Stahara" interesting. One wonders who and what he studied.

Probably had a more external understanding than many westerners today...but still thought you guys might find this interesting.
