Is this kind of work (tanto vs tanto) usual in Yoshinkan dojos?. Can someone bring info about the origins/history of this waza?

My dojo has never perform this kata before. Maybe it is a new addition.

I don't think it's very new. I remember watching some Yoseikan tanto work in a video tape (pre-dvd era) my instructor lent me some years ago.
He also doesn't know about the origins of this kind of work. We're iwamaers and Yoshinkan style dojo are rara avis here.

This waza is not part of the official Yoshinkan Honbu grading syllabus, however is seen in many demo's. Some schools do it and make it a part of their training while others do not.
So to answer your question, YES and NO.
As I understand it, it is yet another way to show/practice proper timing and distance. As to its origin, I'll defer to those on this forum who practiced at the Yoshinkan HQ or in Japan to answer.
If you require any more details, I suggest you write to the honbu and ask. Their e-mail can be found at www.yoshinkan.net

The set of katas is called Tanto Soho. We do practice it over here, and Muguruza Sensei in France/Spain regularly practices it AFAIK.
I beleive the left person in the first video is a student of Ando sensei - a 4th dan who acted as uke for Ando sensei when he visited Germany this year. I don't remember his name though.

I remember this came up about a year ago or so. I did a search and found the old links that I posted on this topic. Here they are again with some further instructions.
...I have a copy of the original IYAF video tapes that contain this form, here is a link to an excerpt that contains tanto soho as provided by [Yoshinkan] honbu...
and again [for the live demo at the Yoshinkan Embu Taikai]
This may not deal directly with your question, however, it may help to give you ideas on what you can do for yourself.
This video comes from the All Japan YOSHINKAN Enbu Taikai and is a standard tanto training drill used by honbu dojo...Hope it helps

Yep, some dojo have extensive series of kata with tanto vs tanto, tanto vs jo (believe it or not), tanto vs bokken too I think. Some of them are really cool...
