View Full Version : VOE: For Beginning Students
Just thought I'd start another new thread (http://www.aikiweb.com/forums/showthread.php?p=172558#post172558) in the Voices of Experience forum.
Outside of the technical curriculum, what do you feel are the most important things you would like beginners to learn for their aikido training?

Simply that beginning students learn how to 'watch'. Even if they have seen something before, the real learning happens when you learn how to watch as if everything is new, because it 'is' new. Every time.

Just ONE thing, NOW.

How to cope productively with frustration.
I can sense the frustration of some of the beginners we have here. They listen to the explanations; they watch as carefully as they can; they imitate as much as they think they are capable of doing-----but the result is quite different. And they see that I do it, and that when I do it, it seems so easy.
Beginners are so interesting to teach.

That Aikido is learned from the inside out and the instructor facilitates the student's process.

Tai Iku, Ki Iku, Toku Iku, Joshiki No Kanyo.

One thing I find valuable is to help people learn to feel and be able to listen with their bodies, and then process the information and feedback both cognitively and intuitively. In my experience, this contributes a lot towards people developing real skill in Aikido.

Do your own due diligence. Delegate this responsibiity to no one else.
Investigate the art form as the one you want to study.
Investigate the dojo, as an environment you feel safe in.
Investigate the instructors, as those you can respect and trust.
Begin, and persevere throughout the duration of your commitment, and never relinquish ownership over your own safety, peace of mind, and right to choose at any time what your inner sensei tells you to see and do.
Have joy in your daily training!
