As I mentioned in my introductory post, I have about a year of kendo under my belt (hopefully more in the near future) and I'm about to give aikido a try. I have my kendo hakama, which I like very much, and I also have a gi from a semester of judo I studied in college a few years back.

Can I use this equipment in aikido practice, or should I plan on buying another gi and hakama for aikido? Also, is my kendo bokken good for aikido as well?

Judo gi's are great for aikido. You may not even need your hakama for a while depending on the dojo, but if you do, it should be fine along with your bokken. Sounds like your ready to rock and roll.

I second Ricky's post. Take your judo gi only in the beginning, and check with either the sensei or a senior student about their hakama customs. Many dojo reserve that for black belts only, while others allow all ranks to wear them. Good luck, and I hope you find it to be as wonderfully rewarding as most of us have!

Thanks for your help. My judo gi is off-white, and from what I've been able to tell the dojos in my area tend toward the bleached white uniforms. Still, it's good to know I can show up on the first day in something other than sweats.

Yeah, its cool in our dojo.
The sensei allows people to wear whatever gi they can get.
I like this flexibility, as not everyone has pockets to get the 'best'.
(also if you are crosstraining, it could come in handy too - whereas I know the Shotokan Karate place, where I live, you have to have a gi with their logo printed up and down the gi.)

by the way, you will probably like using your judo gi...I accidently ripped a guys gi at the shoulder where it had a patch (it was very light material)...and the thicker gi will be better suited for Aikdio.

Peace

My club also tends to use white Judo Gi's for training rather than another type so you should be fine using yours.

as others have said, no problem with an off-white judo gi (it will "bleach out" to white eventually), and the hakama is fine if it's worn. Who are going to train with in Arlington, just curious as I know a few folks down there. Also one other question, who do you train with in Kendo? I get asked about valid Kendo clubs from time to time in my area (Frederick, MD) and there aren't any that I know of here. I would like to forward inquiries for folks who want to train, however. Good luck and train hard.
