Im new not only to aikiweb but to Aikido.
Today I will be taking my 10th lesson (2 lessons a week) - time flies.

I have to admit, I almost didnt start taking Aikido.
See, my Hungarian is not all that great (truly, its on the level of a 3 year old) - and Im American, so the language was an issue for me.

But I have 'stepped' past that deterrent and press on.

By the way, my name is Dalen (day-lynn) and Im originally from the Atlanta area.

Im sure I will be posting more on the forums here at aikiweb.

Peace

Dalen

Thank you for the link.
I have actually lived in Hungary for 2 years now. (my wife is both American/Hungarian so fluent in the language. She actually watches me in class and helps to translate when possible.)

My 4 kids all speak both english & Hungarian. - my 5, 7, & 9 year old all speak better Hungarian than me, and my 3 year old is at the same level as me. :)

I can 'speak', but to truly converse and go beyond hand movements...well is something different. And quite frankly a point of frustration for me as I have been involved in communications for most of my life. - part of the reason I don't 'delve' into the language as I know I can never express myself as I would wish in this second language. - communication is an art, and even in english Im often misunderstood. :)

Anyways, thanks for the link and for the welcome to the board.
I have enjoyed reading the comments from those here at aikiweb.

Thanks for the link...who knows, Hungarian is like aikido - I will eventually get it. ;)

I appreciate the help.

Welcome on board Dalen.

I'm Finnish, living in the Netherlands, and I must say, joining an aikido club really helped me with learning the language. I didn't really speak Dutch when I started aikido, but just being around more Dutch people and hearing more of the language did help. Although it was probably easier for me, since Dutch is so close to other Germanic languages that I already knew by the time...Hungarian is something else I'm afraid! :D

BTW, I read your other thread and I must say I like your attitude. I think it's much better to air your frustrations here, and practice patience at the dojo, than the other way around...

That is totally cool that you were able to jump in and start learning aikido despite the lack of language skills you had with Dutch.

Doing something like that shows you a lot about yourself and where you are at, so to speak. - its excellent for introspection.

It has taught me quite a bit about myself for sure, - as I have just rambled on about in one of my threads. :)

Thanks for your comments,

Peace

- yes Hungarian is quite a unique language indeed. ;)
Wait a minute...your Finnish.
From what I hear Hungarian is in the same language family as Finnish. - albeit a bit distant relative ;)

To be fair to my dojomates at the time though, most of them spoke excellent English (the Dutch usually do). So it's not that we couldn't communicate if it was necessary.
