Hi everyone. Im Gurbaksh (Indian name), greetings from Baton Rouge. I'm new to martial arts and starting Aikido this week at a local dojo called Gentle Wind. Anyone here from B.R.? I took karate as a kid for 4 years (8-12) and am now 17. I want to take Aikido and eventually Tae Kwon Do in conjuction. Im doing it to learn to control my temper, discipline and learning to fight..Any advice? Is Aikido a good art to start with? Im trying to juggle my life and im someone who needs to have every detailed planned..I've always had martial arts as one of those details..I'd like to make it part of my lifestyle and not just do it for sport..
I know no one cares and it doesn't matter but my plans are to become a dentist, design a house like the one my family has in India, have a large garden/ small crop area, a pond, a dojo/meditaton room because im deeply religious, a recording studio/ art studio
If I can achieve this I think I'll be satisfied with my life :p peace

I know the folks at Gentle Wind. Neil and Doug are top-notch. I practice Iaido under the same instructor as they do, and I don't think you will be disappointed.

The folks at Gentle Wind are reputable and knowledgable. Doug Wylie is the senior instructor now. I've been told that Becky Sexton has retired from budo and teaching. Their new dojo space is small but adequate and I think you'll find a good bunch of people there.

The iaido practice is first rate and under John Ray Sensei. He's a traditional teacher of a well respected ryu.

Good luck in your practice.

I guess that's part of "the training" too :-) welcome to aikiweb and best of luck as you set out on a new path with aikido.

Advice-

Budo practice begins with respect, be sure you conduct yourself in a respectful manner in and out of the dojo, as well as online.

I like sensei's advice too- "Don't quit, don't die."

If you want to watch an iaido class, come to a regularly scheduled class about 10 minutes early to speak with the instructor.

Gurbaksh,

I followed up with the other instructor, and he does not remember a visitor or new student matching your description.

The best way to get started is to watch a class or two and discuss your situation with me. If we are a good match I will accept you as a student.

Thanks,

Douglas Wylie
