Hey guys, had a question on picture ettiquette.

I'm making a little display. Bokken, katana, my latest kyu cirtifiquette. Maybe a couple pictures, I'm going to play with it.

I'd like to put up a picture of O'Sensei and also one of Shioda Gozo. In my dogo there is a picture of them in the same picture frame side by side. O'Sensi on the left, Shioda on the right.

My question is, would it be considered rude or something of the like if I put them both in the same picture frame but one on top of the other? O'sensi's picture on top of Shioda Gozo's picture?

i think the black frame taboo of which you speak applies to the pictures of the living, not the dead.

Chinese tradition states that black frames should not be used for living people, as black frames are used at funerals, and thus can be seen as a wish for that person to die soon. Black frames are all right to be used for people who have already died. All of the pictures of O-Sensei I've seen in dojos have black frames.

I'm not so sure about placing someone's photo directly on top of another one. Personally, I don't think it looks all that good, visually. You could get a frame large enough to hold both photos, and use another piece of paper or cardboard as a "mat" between them.

I have always preferred O'Sensei photos in frames highlighting the natural beauty of wood, with perhaps a tung oil finish. It just seemed right, and I would sure hope I don't find out it is symbolically incorrect for some reason.

I read it, and I'm aware of a tradition of USING a black frame in a funeral photo, but I still haven't heard about any taboo from a source I would consider reliable.

You guys take some of this stuff WAY too seriously.
