Is it just me, or does Aikido practice make you want to crack open a cold one?
:)

I don't practice Aikido, but I do practice kendo, and nothing is better than an ice cold beer after keiko. At least in the case of kendo, I think that the beer help bring you down from the adrenaline rush that you get during practice. After keiko, man you are all wired and full of adrenaline. Beer settles me own a bit, and I have heard other kenshi mention this so I know it is not me.

O-sensei used to drink, My sensei drinks, and all of the sensei and my aikido mates in Japan drink beer (never before Keiko though).
It seems that many Aikidoka are less nervous about smoking and drinking than other martial artists. I know several Karase senseis that always say that alcohol is poison...

well, it is an excellent fixative for tissue samples, and it does kill a fair number of things (including humans)in the right dose...

Hi all,
I don't know about you guys, but in my dojo, going for a few cold ones after training was the norm and actually became a tradition of sorts :), especially after gradings and other special events.
We call ourselves an Aikido CLUB and tend to take the club part a bit seriously I guess :D But it does calm the adrenaline after some intenst bouts of randori.
My 2 cents

I thought the whole purpose of any sort of exercise was the Beer.
During my time in Japan it was usual for me to go for food and beer after training.
I suppose anyting with bubbles might work but beer alos has the advantage in not being sweet.
TO answer your question:
Oh yeah, uh huh...
Our dojo moved into a "temporary" space a couple of years ago when we lost our lease, until we could secure a permanent location (and yes, I know two years is a long time to be in a "temporary" space). Anyway, as soon as we found the permanent space which we will be moving into in the very near future, we started to frequent a little bar/restaurant next door to the new location. The bar owner and bartender now know us, and he has already told us he will start carrying some of our favorite brews and is adding another cooler. We just started a formal beginner's class, and it has already become a tradition to take all of the new students out for drinks after they complete the course (only if they're of drinking age, of course!).
So at least here in the Windy City, there does seem to be a correlation between aikido keiko and beer.

Our Dojo is in the grounds of a pub! 'Nuff said.
Have fun.

I've heard Clint George sensei say that sometimes you learn more during biru waza than during regular keiko. I don't drink (anymore), maybe that's why my technique sucks...
Doesn't seem to hurt Kato sensei's Aikido (Beer, that is. Hops, Barley, Yeast, water).

Robert,
Sounds like you have a great tradition at your dojo... maybe I can convince ours to start the same. Maybe you can come lecture on the health benefits...?
Arlington Heights isn't too far from the city. ;)

Well, I think so, and it can't hurt to create the tradition at your dojo. I seem to remember that there's an Irish pub around the corner from your dojo also. You definitely have some friendly folks there (I practiced there once a couple of years ago when our dojos were part of the same organization).
Regards,
After evening practice I like to go get a beer - and now and then we do. However after morning practice I prefer a cup of coffee ;)

My understanding was that O-sensei didn't touch a drop of alcohol (possibly an impression I got from one of John Stevens books). Is this wrong?
(As for us - we go down the bar after every session and we also have 'social' events (parties) every so often.)

Yep, Aikiodo definately gives me "beerhead."
My favourite apres dojo tipple is presently
Pilsner Urquel, an exellent crisp, full bodied
lager, well hopped.
During the colder months, however, I tend to favour darker, British style ales.
Is this any help?

Yep aikido and drinking go hand in hand.
we always go out for 'beer' afterwards.. well, I dont drink so I go out for a coke or something.
but I think it stems from aikido being a very social art, you are not just standing there punching thin air, you are actually interacting with other people. so for me aikido is very much about the people that I train with, so it stands to reason that I will want to socialise afterwards.
I think it is good to get to know those people who will be pummeling you into the tatami ;)
anyway... beer gut/strong hara... wheres the difference? (a good sized gut can be very handy in ude kimi nage)
Kev
Hell.
I'm blitzed every time I step on the mat.
I do Aikido to sober up!
(joke)
What's all this beer talk? It may satisfy the needy neurotransmitters, but it doesn't satiate post-aikido thirst.
What I've found highly useful to satisfy both needs is a good double vodka collins. It tastes like Sprite.
Let's not forget about the wonderful hard liquors out there!
Drew
p.s. I recommend Tanqueray vodka. My gratitude toward our English bretheren for that concoction. I hope my signiture doesn't contradict my post!

Pocari Sweat? Ugh, that stuff is worse than Gatorade, but nothing is quite like a good beer.

They CLOSED it. Horrible. They had great homebrews there... but there's other decent places around...

Drew, I love a good hard liquor, Grey Goose if I feel like vodka, British Sapphire if I feel like gin, but hard liquor after keiko might be a bit too much. <DOUBLE MEANING> Might lose my center if I have too many. </DOUBLE MEANING>. ;)
