...after three classes.
Rolls hurt. Especially when you don't know how to do them right.

Don't worry, it gets easier as you do it more. :)
Rolling was really scary for me when I first tried it.
You start out rolling like a box, but you gradually take the edges off. Practice makes almost perfect. :D

:p Wouldn't that, in more than one ways, be 'Practise Makes Round'? :)
And that means being round is the perfect shape... :D
Not sure if you get better at rolling or the bones eventually become rounded ;)

After two years in aikido, I still feel that I'm squarish circle. I know I have lots to go...sometimes I feel I'm getting use to the slight bumps on my roll instead of really rounding-off the bumps to improve. Anyway, I have years and years of practice ahead so I'll be rolling along.

Either way you become more adapted

Round is in style, didn't you know? :D
There's one student at my dojo, and he's a year younger than me (he's 16) but man, he is ROUND! I wish I was as round as he was... :(

I have two words of advice for you that have greatly helped me.

"I'm going to give you a little advice. There's a force in the universe that makes things happen. And all you have to do is get in touch with it, stop thinking, let things happen, and be the ball."
"Just be the ball, be the ball, be the ball. You're not being the ball Danny."

Well, if it makes you feel any better, I whacked myself in my own nose with my knee the first time I tried rolling. Sensei hadn't seen that one before.

I just did that to myself last week...I guess I was getting a bit arrogant, thinking that after two years at this I'd be over all of that. Brought me back to earth pretty quickly, I can tell you.
And I think I'm still seeing stars. :hypno:

Ugg I hate it when that happens
Or when you get your head stuck up someone’s hakama when you roll. In that situation all I can think is: I hope he’s wearing underwear, I hope he’s wearing underwear…
I like to practice my rolls on exercise balls sometimes… When my Pilates teacher isn’t looking :)

This hasn't happened yet to me, but there's plenty of time...I'll think of you, Rosemary, when I find myself blinded by indigo, staring up the hairy leg of my training partner....
Meanwhile, I'm mostly recovered from that roll I attempted in my inlaws' mostly-frozen front yard the other morning....

Practice on pavement... it makes your ukemi so much softer :)
That or by comparison rolling on mats feels better.
Hum…
It is loads of fun to impress your friends by rolling on the sidewalk

I work at Wendys, at the floor inside the restaurant in pretty hard cement. Needless to say people looked at me odd when I decided to see if I could roll on it without injury.....hehehe. I only felt it a little!

OK, I guess I'm not that extreme yet! I wimped out after one try on the frosty grass. yes, the mat seemed SO nice a moment later.
Mike...it would make a great way to attract more customers if you could perfect that, don't you think? Maybe roll in the parking lot with a sandwich board?
