Both of these arts are very similar when kept in traditional form. There are slightly different technicalities. Hapkido's Soke Sul Choi Young has claimed to be a student of Daito Ryu Aiki Ju-jitsu Takeda Sensei as "O"Sensei was.

It also depends on what kwan is practiced. (ryu) As Hapkido has evolved it has moved away from it's tradition origin. Hapkido is not as formal as Aikido. As a practitioner of both I can only say that they are both Great Arts with the same basic philosophy and similar techniques!!!
