Can anyone suggest a good dvd for a beginner in the art?

It would probably be most effective for you to ask this question of your teacher, as he/she will be most able to recommend something most closely matching the style and methodology you will encounter in your own training.

The complete dvd set of Yoshinkan Aikido is highly recommended by me. You will see all the basic techniques done in various ways. Now mind you, you will have to change the steps slightly to fit the style of Aikido that you practice. I do Aikikai yet I will recommend this set to anyone.

I have this set as well, and recommend it. The DVDs are broken down into the various techniques and basics, and shown from multiple angles. You can select the technique, or basic movement you want to work on from the menu, without having to fast forward through anything. All techniques are shown both standing and kneeling. It's a great reference to have in your Aikido library.
