Hi to all! I'm new to this, so hoping that I even get this posted in the right area! ;)
Hoping someone can help me out with a translation of my name in English to Japanese? I am going to be getting a tattoo on October 19th & I really would like my name in Japanese (to remind me of my brother who spent some time teaching in Japan). My name is Ginae and I would like it translated into the Kanji form.
Can anyone help me on this? Thanks in advance!! :)

Hey Ginae. I'm not sure this is the website for you. It is a martial arts community, not one of language enthusiasts. What you may most likely be able to use to devise a phonetic translation, would be Hiragana (Click here!) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hiragana), a collection of syllables, both consonants and vowels, for words that have no direct translation.
Or, if your name has a meaning behind it's creation, for the sake of the argument, we'll pretend the name Raymond comes from the romantic language bases of rey, and mond. Which basically mean King, and World. So, if Raymond is so named as to imply that he is the king of the world, we would look for terms in Japanese that most closely resemble the nouns, articles, and possesive qualifiers necessary to say so. That is precisely where my input must end because what I know about japanese plus 2 dollars would only get me a seat on the NY metro.
michael (from hebrew, meaning 'likened to god', or the question "Who is like god?") is apparently translated to マイケル (maikeru), though I couldn't tell you if that was based off meaning, or hiragana. From the phonetic spelling at the end, I'd bet the above bus-fare that is was the latter.
You're not likely to get much more than that, but at least it's something, good luck! Oddly enough a language enthusiast in this martial arts community happened to see your post.

I've heared Smith a lot as:
"smee-suh"

if you pronounce it Ji na eh:
JI could be:
$B;~(Btime
$B;{(B temple (buddhism)
$B<!!!(Bnext
$B;x!!(Bsamurai
na would be:
$BL>!!(Bname
$BFn(B $B!!(Bsouth
$BFd!!(Bcalm/lull (related to wind)
$BFa!!(Ba particle used in proper names, no actual independent meaning
eh would be:
$B3(!!(Bpicture
$B2q!!(Bmeet
$B1I!!(Bflourish or prosper
I suggest you copy these and blow them up real big on ms word or something, and then decide which combo you want to use. I would focus more on what it looks like, than what it means, and many japanese names aren't all that meaningful, contrary to popular belief. It's like having a name like Doug Stonerock. Stonerock just sounds cool, not necessarily ultra-meaningful.
may i suggest:
$B;xFd1I(B
$B!J(Bcalm, glorious samurai)
$B<!L>2q(B
(next name meeting) but it looks good

It's not the 21st. Did you do it?
Hope you like it.
