has anyone attended the yoshinkan dojo's senshusei course?

i am interested to find out about:

1) just how physically demanding it is and what level of fitness is required

2) the daily routine

3) the value attached to it by anyone who has completed it

4) anything that you could tell me which you think i should know if i was considering doing it.

Hello Stephen,

I would got to this Yahoo group and ask your question there. There are a few former senshusei that reside on that message board that I am quite sure would be happy to answer all of your questions.

Also, Mike (Spike) Kimeda does read and post here occationally. He was one of the foriegn instructors for this course for a time, and is also the moderator (or at least was at some point) for the yahoo group mentioned above. You should be able to find his profile here somewhere...

I know people who have taken the course...you should be very fit when you start.

Best,
Ron

On this site you should be able to get contact to Mike Stuemple - he resides in Tokyo and has been involved with the senshusei course... He should be able to give you some good info... And he's a really nice bloke. I practiced with him once in his dojo in Tokyo.

There is also the book "Angry White Pajamas" But I am not sure what the yoshin guys think of the views and opinions of the author.
A good read, if different from what I expected.

As an aside, How is theat story perceived by any of the Yoshinkan who post here?

Just as a interesting question.

Some of the reviews on this site for that book come from people who were portrayed in the book itself:

Hope that helps,

From what I read in AWP, the senshusei boyz are cannon fodder for the BIG DOGS at YOSHINKAN HOMBU. Of course, Mike Twiggy's description of the course has been challenged. So FWIW...

To answer your question specifically:
Q: just how physically demanding it is and what level of fitness is required?
A: Very physically demanding. Think of your previous Gasshuku (Intensive) training, now multiply it with 365 days 24/7. Get the picture.

Q: the daily routine
A: It is a form of shugyo (monastic endeavour) It is a detachment from your everyday life for 365/ (366 if it is leap year) days.

Boon.
