It looks as if Aikido of Santa Barbara on East Cota Street is the latest in a rapidly growing list of local businesses that are being forced out of their longtime locations due to rising rents and a big-money real estate market. (http://www.independent.com/news/2006/08/aikido_gets_kicked_out.html)

I just heard from a friend that is one of the instructors there that they may have found a solution to keep them in the dojo. :-)
An old sensei of mine was a builder and had lots of builder friends and they were raisig money to build a dojo (not sure what happened in the end). Ultimately that is the ideal solution - own your own place!

You can't realistically make money out of aikido. So do the reverse: make a lot of money and then put up your own dojo.

Speaking about aikido not being a money maker, when the senseis were talking after a demo and explaining about them being not in it for the money, one of them quoted, "To make a little fortune, take a big fortune and open an aikido dojo"

This is really sad.
But who know perhaps they'd find a better place? :)
