Dojo's in Hull, UK

I've had a young student training with me for a couple of weeks, but she will shortly be returning to University in Hull. She would like to continue practciing Aikido, so I'm looking for a dojo.

I've found two clubs (Zenshin Kokoro & Rising Sun), does anyone here know either club?

Or are there any other clubs in Hull?

I've met and trained with Jason and Paul who are the instructors at Rising Sun.

Both seem to be good guys with about 15 years experience.

I don't think there would be any problems with your student taking a look at them.

Damned Hull, that place was responsible for getting me into aikido and I've never forgiven it.

There also used to be an aikijitsu dojo in town as well (OK, it was a while ago) - the guy running it had a very nice take on atemi and never relying on grabbing uke, just using hooks and anchors. Alternatively, Dave Humm's up in that end of the woods so may have some ideas as it doesn't look like the group I was with are still there.

OT - ask her if the Bev road run is still a favourite past-time, I'd like to think students are still as dumb as I was.

Hull, is just 40 minutes away from me (Cleethorpes), although it involves crossing the Humber Bridge (£2.70 each way)

We train Thursday 6.30pm - 7.30pm Muso Shinden Ryu Iai then 7.30pm - 9.30pm Aikido.

Saturday 4pm - 6pm Muso Shinden Ryu Iai

Sunday 3pm- 6pm Aikido.


George McMaster (Zenshin Kokoro Dojo) is a good friend of mine and a guest instructor at my dojo. I've met Jason and Paul from the Rising Sun Dojo when they attended a seminar of mine.

your student would be most welcome to study with us either regularly (which I think will be a bit impractical) or as an occasional guest, we have a seminar on the 2nd and 3rd of September with Peter Brady rokudan so hombu and she is very welcome.

The rising sun club at Kelvin Hall school is the closest to the university area of town. I trained there a couple of times and they seen to be a good crowd. The only other club I trained at was at a gym called art of fitness which I thinhk was on anlaby road. This was also a good class but if you are a student and transport is a problem Kelvin Hall school will be the best bet.

I'm a member of the Weston-super-Mare Rising Sun Aikido club - I believe my sensei trained with Jason and Paul of the Rising Sun club in Hull before he relocated to Weston. They should be a nice choice. ^^

Thanks for the info folks, I have pointed her towards Rising Sun since she is a student without transport and it seems to be the closest to her locale.

Hi,
I got into Aikido during a vacation in europe and taking a break from rock climbing <cooool>, I had trained a bit in Tae Kwon Do and visited a martial arts class thinking about joining in their TKD. I stayed and watched a class training Aikido - all I'd seen before of Aikido was a couple of Steven Seagal movies-, went back a couple of days later tried it and was hooked ('n' confused!).
Back in the States I trained a bit at NY Aikikai and since moving to the UK have trained with George McMaster in Hull.
True enough the Anlaby Rd Dojo was awkward logistically (parking and those stairs!) but since the new venues for Zenshin Kokoro Aikido opened in January 2008 - one at the parish hall and the other at Mitchell Community Centre - also coool.
