As Jun was in search of the "competition" quote origins, does anyone know the original version and source/context of the quote that aikido is 90% atemi? I have often read and heard that O Sensei said this.

No one? So am I to suspect that O Sensei actually didn't ever say so? Or are you just all on holiday? ;-)

Yep, Ueshiba said 90% atemi, but he also said other amounts like 70 or 80% (can't remember now). Also Gozo Shioda has said the same thing (which isn't too suprising)- possibly quoted in his 'aikido the master course' or one of the other books attributed to him.

Personally, I don't think the point is that when you do aikido you have to belt them with your fist alot. I think its the awareness (of uke and tori) of all the openings which are presented by the other person in which a strike or kick could be made. Thus if uke is good there are no openings for an atemi and if tori is good the same applies. (The movement of uke to avoid the strike is part of the dynamic motion of the aikido - and obviously if they don't move you strike them).

Ian,

I thank you for your input and seem to agree with your point of view, but I am still searching for the original version of what O Sensei actually said, for the source of all this. As you mention, the quote seems to have varied when being transmitted and therefore (and for reason of my natural curiosity) I'd like to find a somewhat "original" version.

Thanks
Markus

Markus,

I have gone through all the published writings of O Sensei that I possess and I can find no reference to atemi. The problem is that only a very small proportion of what O Sensei said has been written down.

Yours sincerely,
