I am interested in purchasing a Katana for cutting practise but there are many variations of size, blade length and length of tsuka. I canít help but think if there is a rule of thump when it comes to buying the correct Katana for ones height
I am 5Ē9 and of medium build the Katana I am interested in is the (Paul chen) practical pro, but with a blade length of 29.5 inches and a tsuka of 15 inches, I cant help but think it might be a bit big for me.
Any advice would be appreciated

Why nopt get a Buster sword (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Final_Fantasy_weapons#Buster_Sword) or its updated version (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Final_Fantasy_weapons#First_Tsurugi) instead?

A real answer would be: hold the katana in your right hand with it along your leg. The tip of the sword should touch the floor.

Uh, the REAL answer (TM), is ASK YOUR TEACHER. Especially if you are doing tamashigiri, you should have a qualified instructor to guide you. The style of sword work will make a difference in how you draw, which will affect the sword length your teacher prefers. Please be safe.

Iaido-l is a good place to ask. They discussed something similiar quite recently.

I am speaking of a bokken rather than a katana, but when considering the length, you should hold it in your right hand and the tip should pass over your foot. I use this formula for bokken length as regards child students. I use it for myself as well. If the length needs to be shortened, I advise that the blade end be shortened, rathjer than the hilt end.
