Close call

I was walking home on monday night when I heard this woman screaming. So I went to have a look to see what was happening. In an alley way behind some flats I saw this large man (6'+ well built) dragging this woman along the ground into one of the flats, she was in quite a state, in a mess with blood pouring out of her nose. As I saw it there was nothing to be done but to challenge the man.
So I shouted "Oi!" but he ignored me. So again I shouted "Oi, leave her alone!" and started walking towards him. At this he started walking towards me and I started backing off slowly trying to keep my mai-ai telling him to calm down and relax, calmly but firmly. This didn't seem to be working and it looked like I was going to have to fight him, so I stopped. At which point he calmly turned around, walked straight past the woman and into the flat. The woman got up and ran behind me and I told her to stay behind me as I started backing off onto the street. At this point I thought he'd gone for a knife or something. Then this other woman ran out of the alley way and started shouting at the first woman "I told you not to come round, I told you he was in a mood". The first woman was laying in a heap against a wall crying at this point and I probably should have gone and checked her out but I didn't want to turn my back on the alley way incase the man came out again. Anyway it wasn't long between the second woman coming out and the arrival of a third woman who told the other two to "get into the car", so they left the scene. I was about to call the police when they showed up, en masse. They asked if I had anything on me and I told them I was unarmed and that the person they were looking for was in one of the flats, at which they left me standing there and went off into the flats. Then a second load of police turned up and I told them where to go. I thought I'd hang around incase they wanted to talk to me and eventually one of them came out and asked me where the woman had gone, I told him that as far as I knew she'd got into a car. He took me out on to the main street and asked who the woman was that was being talked to by a couple of police and I told him that it was the woman that was being beaten up. He thanked me and sent me on my way.

Nice job indeed. The most dangerous kind of intervention is a domestic one, so it is fortunate that things turned out as smoothly as they did.
