on monday i moved back home (from where i went to uni), partly so i can get more martial arts training in.

the aiki club i went to for the first time is still aikikai (like what i trained in before) but its very slightly different. for me i think in a good way.

i thoroughly enjoyed the session, but found that i ended up doing me old style rather than what my new teacher was showing me.

ive never thought myself to be naturally talented at aiki and ive previously only trained once a week for a few months. i never realised that what i had learnt became inately stuck before now. its wierd.

has anyonelse found this before? if so how did you deal with it etc?
cheers for any views
:p

I stopped practicing aikikai Aikido 16 years ago. I have been study shodokan (tomiki) Aikido for a few months now and have the same problem of slipping into older style when doing a technique. My mind says do shodokan, but my body wants to do aikikai.
Instead of trying to modify the aikikai techniques that I already know, I tell myself that I am learning a new martial art. When I have this frame of mind it is easier.

This reminds me of the story of the man who had two watches and was no longer sure what time it was.

Yes, getting beyond old ways of doing things takes some practice and patience.
