About once a year sensei gives us "movie day" and he brings in a big stack of videos of O'Sensei from various times in his career. I really enjoy this as every time I watch them I can comprehend what I'm seeing just a teeeeeny bit better- how can you comprehend this stuff!?
Anyway Sensei has given us a homwork assignment- we had to formulate a question for O'Sensei, anything other than " How the (insert expletive of choice) did you DO THat????!!!"
MIne is about seeing by touching. How do I know, when working with someone who is having trouble with a technique, and particularly a technique that I also have trouble with, how do I know to tell them Exactly what they need to do to make the technique work-be it "point over my shoulder" ;"open/close your eyes";"turn your foot";etc? I can't See what they're doing but how do I know what correction to give?
This eveolves to ,with this kind of intuition, how do some people (my Sensei, Wendy Palmer,, my sempai Sasun) know just by touching my shoulder that I'd been wearing high heels recently, or that my eyes are closed, or "where it Really hurts"...is it the same thing? How can I possibly be developing it? What Is It?
Anyway we are to ask ourselves that before the show and see if we can get some insight from the viewing.
What would YOU ask O'Sensei?

what the heck were you smoking when you created aikido!?!?!? :D
I don't really think I would ask anything in particular...it would be nice to just get on the mat and take the ukemi. That seems to be where most of the info gets imparted.
Best,
Ron

would you teach me???? Oh pleeeeeeeeease.
LOL.
I guess I'd like to know if it's all based on jiu-jitsu or if he invented some stuff.
What's your favourite food?
Who's your favourite student?
Who's your most annoying student?
Who's your best?
What's it all about?

"How are you?" seems like the best question.

"who do you think was your best student?"
"Where were you before you came back?" "What was it like?" "Did they do Aikido there?" :)

I would show him some of the different styles of aikido (from the shodo-thugs to the McDojo's) and ask him what he thought about the way his art had gone

What would YOU ask O'Sensei?
I would ask this:
"O-Sensei, what question should I ask you and what is the answer?"

Ya know,. my Sensei was dead serious when he gave us this assignment. He had us think and discuss and re-frame our questions till we got something That could be answered in Some Way by watching OSensei in action.
How many of these questions can be answered this way? Mine was.

I think mine was too, and I'd really ask him:
"O-Sensei, what question should I ask you and what is the answer?"
Maybe the value of your assignment was in the thinking, discussing, and re-framing the question, and not the final question itself.
Steve
It sounds like your sensei was expecting a specific answer from you. Maybe to lead your thinking in a certain direction.

No, he just wanted us to ask it in a way OSensei would have wanted to answer. SInce OSensei generally laughed off questions like most of the ones above. He was Very happy with my question, and that my question WAS answered by watching OSensei in action.

How do they get the trains down the escalators on the London underground?

tim, we have been through this before, they don't use the escalators, they use the stairs as they are wider, dum-ass ;)
