My return on the mat was painful. Last thursday, I rolled on my rib cage and heard a "crack" Monday, I had severe pain breathing and I did an X-Ray. No broken rib but still severe pain (muscle pain?). I'm on medication since then. Really disturbing but it's the pain or the dizziness. in either way, I will not be able to continue Aikido for the following weeks but with medication, I'm no longer in pain. I'm glad my wife is retired from work due to pregnancy, she can drive me to work and pick me up at the end of the day since I'm probably a driving hazard.
I hope to be back on the mat before end of october but even with the best will in the world, my health is my first consideration.
Today was my first weapons class since my return... I did quite well overall. Still hurt from thursday missed ukemi but as long as I do the complete technique and don't try to stop or shortcut it in any way, I'm good since I don't have to stress my thoracic muscles.
We did Jo training, it was nice since I didn't get to train with a partner for the last two years.
One member of the dojo was there with his daughter for the kids class just before us. I wonder if my kid will love Aikido as much as his father in a few years... I certainly hope to bring him over a couple of times.
Between the kids class and ours, there is 30 minutes. I did some free practice (rolls) about 80. My original goal was 100 for the first time in 2 years but the mat became overcrowded so I decided to stop.
Missed my first ukemi yesterday. I was supposed to roll but instead I landed my elbow on the ground, my thorax landed into my elbow and it hurted badly. I had difficulty breathing for 3 seconds and then, I was about ok... Still hurt when I press on my side but I will survive! For the kids class, I was partenered with the oldest daughter of a friend who has 2 kids in the course.
Saturday will be more easy (usually weapons class) but we will see in due time.
New rule for me: On yokomen, do not forget to move your back leg being you. If you don't, you will be "opened" for a kick between the legs by your attacker.
After about 2 years off, I decided to get back on the mat. My first course was on tuesday. What an evening... rolling, falling, doing Ikkyo again as if I was new to the art... The difference between this first course and the very first time I did Aikido is that now, I know when I do something wrong.
It's nice however to meet again with the group and hear what's new in their life.
My second course is today and I feel a lilttle muscle pain from tuesday. I will go here today even if I feel sore. This pain is a good feeling...
Saturday will be the weapons class, I am eager to get there!
On tuesdays, I trained for 1 hour with Jean-Charles, a friend of mine who is 4th Kyu. We focussed on my exam. 4th Kyu. At the end of the session, we looked at his, the 3rd Kyu wich will probably take place in 2007.
On Thursdays, I arrived also 1 hour early. But Thursdays are for parents - kids class. So, I went on the mat as an teacher helper. I saw, helped and corrected one team by week. It was very interresting.
On Saturdays, I arrived for the last half hour of the kids class and for the half hour between the kids class and the adult class, I did about 150 rolls... it helped me a lot for my techniques. I realised that I was so exhausted that the techniques came naturally.
December 16th, it was the examination at my dojo...
I did for the first time the uke during an exam.
It was for the kids classes. Really interresting, very stressfull too. I was so focussed into the techniques the younger ones had to do that I almost forgot my own.
As a result that I had to be super concentrated for my exam. It went well
I received congratulations from my teacher and partners. I am very proud of it.
In 2007, I'll train for my 3rd Kyu, I hope to get it in May but if it's not in May, it will be in December.
For Christmas, I received a mat that I installed into my training room at home. I filled two bags, one with techniques and one with attacks. I train at home every day,
I had a vision of a kata with 3 attakers with bokken.
You make a step to the left directing the bokken down to the side of you with your bokken, you hit your attaker's weapon with a shomen type strike (to push his blade down in the ground) and then, you move on him, with your blade striking him right in the thorax. take a step foward and since bokken are in wood, your opponent will fall down
Left of you, there is a second attaker that start shomen also (your bokken being down from the first cut) you block him like the first one but instead of getting his blade down in the ground, you hit him directly yokomen.
At your back, your last opponent is starting a shomen on you. You run into him with a blade striking him in his torso and then, since you are past him, do a 180 to hit him shomen (if he is still standing...)
This summer, we are a couple of friends who wishes to practice weapons by our own (5th kyu to 2nd kyu) It's one kata I wish to try to find if it works or not. But for now, it is a dream.
My name is Vincent Dorval, I'm currently 5th Kyu and I train at the Loretteville Dojo. We train both traditionnal and modern combat effective way. As an example, we do ushiro the traditionnal way but also grabbed directly from the back.
I'm starting my blog to keep track of my studies of the aikido. I'm willing to publish all my findings to help others to learn aikido more easily.
from now, as I am 5th kyu, here's a list of what seems to be things that are important to learn at that level and before:
-Control the elbow, you will control the body
-Don't push the elbow, grab it
-Your arms should be completely extended for ikyo
-In a choke, you have to make noise to be released
-Chiko hurt withouts your gi pants
-Even if you are small, you have to go down to pass under for shionage
-Kotegaeshi is a push and twist technique, not only twist
-For sankyo, you have to get the hand of the uke in line with the arm and elbow
-Koshinage hurts if you don't hit the ground before it hit you
-If you move one of your arms, you have to move a leg to.
