In Miscellaneous Jury duty got me down Entry Tools Rate This Entry

I just got back from a jury summons. Normally I look forward to active participation in our system (voting etc) but this one is a bit much.

The charges are 3 counts around child molestation event and one count of trafficking in stolen property.

All I can see are the faces of my children and I just can't do it. There is no way I can give this poor pitiable schmuck the justice and fair review of the evidence he deserves. Our system of justice depends on it and I can't do it.

I'm a failure to the nation and my fellow citizens and I really don't know what to make of this right now.

Thanks

I got off easy and did not get seated or questioned by the attorneys. It has been a very active few days of introspection. It didn't really gel until after lunch that the real issue comes down to exactly what is reasonable. I hold that it is reasonable to not believe what people say but need to have evidence to support what is claimed. Some find it perfectly reasonable to go to church and go through the rituals and worship the creator. Other find it patently ridiculous.

I listened very carefully to the instructions and they did not say don't talk about it. We still have a long way to go as they just are getting ready to sort through us to seat a jury. I was surpised at the 18+ page questionaire they had us fill out ... Seems like a play to say they can't get a decent jury. I'm sure the judge won't go for that. I go back tomorrow but I sure don't feel any better about it ...we'll see.

Rob, take it easy. The fact you are self reflecting on this means in fact you _are_! That is the best a person could do. Just listen to the evidence. Hey; wait a sec; aren't you supposed to NOT be talking about this?! ; ) Josh

Linda Eskin Says:
Do you think that if he really were not guilty (as in, some poor guy picked up on a case of mistaken identity, perhaps), that you would be able to find him "Not Guilty"? If you are feeling just so angry about the situation that "someone must pay" for the crime, even if it's not the right person, then you could ask to be excused, I'd think. (?) But I doubt that's what you meant. Being fair doesn't mean going easy on him. Justice might be served by a harsh punishment.
