Who am I?

Tell me, who are you?
The Buddha is queried
I am he who woke up.
Was the response
So goes the ancient story
So simple, so profound
So, when I sit, once settled
I start off my session
With that very question:
Who am I?
I let it reverberate
Bounce around inside my head
I watch it slip over the edge
And come back up
Again and again
Who am I?
Who am I?

I am still waiting for an answer

Dojo Tiger

He had mastered kata
And thought himself invincible
A real dojo tiger
But he had not thought beyond
Beyond mere form, mere kata
To the place where victory
Wasn't assured, wasn't preordained
A battlescape where blood,
Pain, and death lived

The awakening was shocking
Was brutal - but his opponent
Called blood, pain, and death, home
To be treated with the fear and respect
They deserve and demand
And be paid a regular tithe
So, planning for victory
Also meant planning for defeat
The opening was where it always was
In the space between the forms -
The gaps - where true victory lies

Step Through

Only in pain
Can you know pain
Only in joy
Can you know joy
Only in experience
Can you know experience
Thinking and learning
Will only get you so far
Drop them off at the threshold
Mystical everyday life beckons
Step through

Flowers Bloom

A monk shits in the woods
Flowers bloom in multicolored forests
The sun hurries across the sky
As does the silver moon
What does it all mean?
Everything? Nothing?

At this time of year
When I do zazen
And I am deep
Deep into the silence
The deepest silence
I hear something
A whispering something
Coming closer, closer
And I see a light - reddish

With a subdued roar
And swish of parting air
Rudolph, leading eight friends
Passes over me
On a mission of joy
But, looking back at me
Santa smiles in understanding
With a promise to return
When I am ready

The Moon

The moon high in the night sky
My mouth, full of moonbeams
I am speechless, finally

Snow Falls

The snow falls
Quietly, thickly,
With implacable efficiency

Even as it kills me
I bow in gratitude
For the beauty revealed

Footsteps Disappearing

Through my open window
The moon's light limitless
I inhabit my absence
My heart-mind at peace
My true nature comes forth
I think of walking on falling snow
Footsteps disappearing
With each step

At the Water-Hole

Late at night
At the water-hole
Animals think nothing
Of drinking in the moon
In the water
If I joined them
What would happen?

Quiet Mystery

Candlelight crowds the night
In quiet mystery
Thought and silence
Merge together
In primal unity
Who else knows of this?
