A Celebration of Life

People and palaces
Mountains and rivers
All erode over time
But the teaching remains

Kilworth Chapel
A gathering, a remembrance
A commemoration of a life
But mostly, a celebration
Of a very special life!
Solemn, respectful, beautiful,
But, full of joy, also!

The chanting, the chanting
The Heart Sutra - The Heart of the
Perfection of Understanding

Something we can all meditate on
Feeling so familiar and soothing
Deep, flowing, harmonious...
The drum, beating in counterpoint
Occasionally, a bell would ring
All blending into a comforting whole
Resonating within the congregation

Life is but a brush of wind
Lightly felt upon the world
So goes an old Chinese saying
But, not so some lives
Chiba Sensei left his mark
In his family, his friends,
His organization, his art,
And in all his students

His life was more like a rock
Thrown into life's pond
With ripples expanding out and out
In ever increasing waves
With each of his loved ones
And all his students over the years
Creating their own ripples, ripples
A continuation of a heritage and a legacy
Beyond one mere mortal life

... but a brush of wind...?
Not so...unless that wind
Is a hurricane!

Summer Camp...
As gi and hakama flow
A gathering of hearts!

Movement in Stillness

Open/close
The choreography
Oh, so apparent
But, inside, inside
That movement
So hard to discern
So hard to see
Open/close/open...
Close/open/close...
A continuous cycle
A movement in stillness

Action + Intention

Action plus intention
The common law test
For criminal culpability
Or, the basis for
A good martial art technique

So, when the attack comes
And I respond
Am I committing a crime
Or just practicing
My art?

Form

Proper form is not the same
As good technique
It is just the framework
To pour technique and heart into
Consecrate yourself to the battle
And, train accordingly

Tablet of Destiny

The Tablet of Destiny
Gives us the fate of all
But only the gods can read it
I implore the tengu
High on Mount Kurama
As mentors and teachers
For those on the Path
To intercede on my behalf and
To tell me of my fate

I feel their ghost energy
Vibrate through me as they visit
But, they only sit and watch
Perhaps this is their message
Perhaps I am not worthy
Perhaps I am only dreaming
I sit, as they do, and enter into
The Great Deep
But the answer, as like the tengu
And the Tablet
Remains inscrutable, mysterious

Perhaps seeking immortality
And life's ultimate answers
Is for actual sennin
And not for a mere mortal
Such as myself
Still, who does not crave
To know their ultimate fate?
Especially if it is written
By some other's hand!

Something to Nothing?

How do you get
To nowhere from somewhere?
From something to nothing?

It is easier to feel this nothing
Than to see it...
More easily experienced
Than intellectually grasped

So, it seems hidden and dark
But, when actually experienced
This nothing is full of light

Shoshin

Shoshin
Beginner's mind
Less is more
The tabula rasa
A foundation only

Creating a void
To achieve emptiness
The ecstasy of stillness
The music of silence

Seeking to lose all
That has been attained
Mushin in motion
The dojo bell's triple notes

Creating the quiet
Where the soul can travel
Seeking completion with
Fellow travelers of the Way

Each contributing
To the journey
Seeking pain and joy
In the union

Of flesh, minds, and souls
The swirling of limbs and hakama
Contributing to the whole
Ending where it begins
Beginner's mind
Shoshin

The Crane

The crane moved
As cranes are wont to move
Slowly, elegantly, precisely
Each step taken with consideration
A delicate grace...
Fujin, the wind god
Brushing the reeds around her
Catching, lifting her wings
Forming a glittering cape

Her quick eye catches me looking
And she stops -- poised
Ready with her tengu wisdom
Should I prove worthy
But, the moment passes
And, once again, she is just a crane
Probing, probing what lies
Just below the surface
As I, inelegantly, also try to do

Black Stone

I walk the path - slowly
There is no hurry for the dead
My fingers softly brushing,
Trailing along the smooth Wall
Only the many indentations
Of engraved names
Breaking the smoothness
And, artifacts of sorrow
Left in honor and remembrance

I stop, now and again
Reading names, reading names...
Strangely, I always look
For my own name
My own name engraved
In black stone

Perhaps it is my own guilt
And, my own graying reflection
And, the tears, the tears
Always come, always come
The Three Soldiers
(Are they crying, too?)
Seem to follow me as I walk
Back and forth, back and forth
Fingers softly brushing black stone

I hope that you will take some time, this Memorial Day weekend, to remember the original purpose behind this time and give a nod, however briefly, to our men and women in our military services and to all our veterans out there.

Beyond the Moon

If you could climb over
And step beyond the moon
Would you be any closer to heaven?

The path to heaven
Is measured by desire
Not by linear distance or direction

Our longing is the most direct route
Up, down, back, front...
All irrelevant

Look at what you love
Embrace this love fully
And you are already there
