When the sun rises
When at night, the moon
And the stars come out
When it rains, and I
Walk quiet, wet streets
When it snows in hushed wonder
At the dojo, when I sweat
And take in hot breaths
I think of you at all these times
And marvel in joy and gratitude
That you share my life

Sleeping Hakama

Sleeping hakama
They rest there
On the tatami
Drying, cooling
Energetic sweat evaporating
From a day's hard practice
Black, empty shapes
Resting proudly
Awaiting their owners'
Eventual return
To fill the empty forms
With hard practice
And strong technique

Simple Awareness

In contemplation
Forget the world
Gnaw at the simple awareness
Of your own being
Your own self
Eventually, cast it aside
Into this vacuum created
Will fall a greater something
Where everything dwells

Try as I Might

Try as I might
The monkey mind
Is not as quiet
As the Zen mind
I adjust my breathing
Settling deeper into my zafu
- Forget that itch!
Focus - don't focus
Let everything be - not be
Breathe - not breathe...

My Sacred Place

My sacred place
Is just a cushion
In front of a mirror
But, I sit there, in zazen
And simply experience
Who and what I am
And, what I might become
A place of rest,
Inspiration, and incubation
The lights are dim
A candle burns
As I sit

When It's Dark

When it's dark
When it's quiet
I go back to my source
Where nothing happens
Though something does
So I sit, letting it occur
Nothing happens
It is dark and quiet

Summer Day

In my dream
I hear the dojo bell ring
We are all lined up
Ready for class
As the last ring fades away
Sensei begins class
My aikido is marvelous
Fluidity and harmony
As natural as warmth
On a summer's day
When I wake up
I still hear the fading bell
But my aikido, my aikido
My aikido still awaits
That summer day

Silent Moon

A night so hushed
Nothing moving, nothing
Not a sound anywhere
Not even my own breathing

I never noticed before
That the moon is so quiet
So profoundly, deeply silent
As it transcends the night sky

Transparent Moonlight

Transparent moonlight
Shining on an empty mountaintop

Where once a temple stood
Abandoned by enlightenment

The Right Word

The power of the right word
Rightly, properly, perfectly used
Capturing the moment just right

Yet, the real experience
Is surely beyond mere words
Beyond the reasoned architecture
Of the poem's structure

Words are simply the pointing finger
To the authentic experience
Ame furaba fure, kaze fukaba*
