So mock grading time comes around and I kneel down, bow and I feel a draft. I quickly look and there is a hole maybe an inch or so in my trousers.

Sensei immediately starts laughing but we carry on with suwari waza. So I make forward foot irimi and my trousers rip from the crotch to the knee.

Not happy.

My mind tends to ramble, and I am feeling a great temptation to offer advice, as a person nearing seventy, from my own perspective. Doesn't this clarify your readiness to grade for shodan, if you have worn out at least one pair of gi trousers? (If your style wears hakama at shodan). I hope you don't mind my commenting, we are cheering for you to become assistant instructor, as your sensei recommends.
