In General Between 1st and 2nd class Entry Tools Rate This Entry

I took my first class Tuesday night, and feel like I did pretty well.
The sempai had me do backward rolls, then kneeling forward rolls, then
standing forward rolls. I think I had less difficulty with it than a
true novice because I have been observing my daughter's classes for the
past month - this at least gave me an idea of what the ukemi should look
like. Sempai also showed me Tai no Henko, which was wonderful. The
moment when you feel the blending and the shift of uke's balance is
simply magical. We also practised changing hanmi to step off the line of
attack. My shoulders took a bit of punishment from the standing forward
rolls, but I'm ready to go at it again tonight.

Aikido Ed Says:
Though new to Aikido myself, I had to learn breakfalls in my previous Martial Arts training. I still struggle, and, in my first Aikido class this past Friday, did a forward roll rather awkwardly and injured my shoulder. I think the older that we grow, the less natural falling down becomes - I wonder why? After all, as children we would bounce ourselves all over the place - I swear my 3 year old daughter is made of rubber! I wonder if it's something evolutionary - to fall is to vulnerable. Perhaps it's our body rebelling against youth.... Ah, to be a cat!
