I took my first class Tuesday night, and feel like I did pretty well.
The sempai had me do backward rolls, then kneeling forward rolls, then
standing forward rolls. I think I had less difficulty with it than a
true novice because I have been observing my daughter's classes for the
past month - this at least gave me an idea of what the ukemi should look
like. Sempai also showed me Tai no Henko, which was wonderful. The
moment when you feel the blending and the shift of uke's balance is
simply magical. We also practised changing hanmi to step off the line of
attack. My shoulders took a bit of punishment from the standing forward
rolls, but I'm ready to go at it again tonight.
