In General Shomen uchi Entry Tools Rate This Entry
  #2 New 06-10-2005 07:46 AM
Started with shomen uchi last night with my new group. They have had about 20 lessons right now. First explained how a shomen is done and practised this for a while. Showed a shomenstrike with the sword and told them to cut and not to hit like a hammer.
Next did some taisabaki with shomenattack. Once more it became clear that beginners have trouble with moving! But the group did fine.
As a technique we did shomen uchi iriminage. Pretty tough because it is quite different with a dynamic attack.
As "homework" we did Ikkyo undo. We will go on with this next week.

In General works! Entry Tools Rate This Entry

Well, this works very well! I'll give it a try.
At this moment I am thinking about teaching tonight advanced class. What shall I do? There are exames coming up in a few weeks. Maybe some basics are in order. But basics with a dynamic toutch.
Tommorow I will take over a beginnersclass of a friend of mine. He runs another dojo. I am looking forward to this class. It is quite the same level as my own group I started a few month agoo outside my own dojo (where I teach tonights class).
For me the basics are important. Taisabaki, hipmovement, speed and timing are principles I try to teach. After this; well, in my homedojo I am not the headteacher so the students (including me) are on there own to develop their own color. My motto is: seek what is best for you but don't forget the basic principles. In my experience it seems that in the end with this idea most people have a simulair style of aikido. It is the style of the dojo. In our case: Suganuma Sensei's style (from Fukuoka, one of the last students of O Sensei).
It is my believe that in the end everything turns out well even though you have 4 different instructors in the same dojo.
