Aikido
Doka of the Day - July 29, 2014
Aiki!
A way so difficult to analyse.
(But one needs only to) follow
The natural rotations of the
Heavens.

Online Video: Video Interview with Kyoichi Inoue (10th dan, Yoshinkan Aikido)
Posted 7/26/2014 11:50am [from Gadi Shorr]

It is with great delight that I present to you this video interview with Kyoichi Inoue, one of the first Uchi Deshi of Master Gozo Shioda. Mr. Inoue who helped shape and develop the art of Yoshinkan Aikido was also the head of the Yoshinkan Honbu Dojo for many years. Mr. Inoue granted me the honour of conducting this video interview in April. I want to give a special thank you to Mr Saburo Takashima who arranged the interview and translated and to Mr Sharon Kobayashi of SGK productions who filmed and edited this video.

Video/DVD: New film featuring O-Sensei
Posted 7/26/2014 11:50am [from Ze'ev Erlich]

Three new films of O-Sensei - discovered in July 2014 (Part 1/3) A few weeks ago, one of our dojo members came to the dojo with a CD containing a film. To my huge surprise, it was an un-seen-before film of founder of Aikido (Ueshiba Morihei O-Sensei). Apparently, Yedidya who has a pottery studio was approached by one of his student (Ms. Carole Habib). Her father was a French Aikidoka who was an Air-France pilot and he made frequent flights to Tokyo. In those days, pilots used to stay for about 2 weeks in Japan before returning to France. So, he could practice Aikido at the Hombu Dojo where sometimes O-Sensei used to teach. Founder of Aikido Ueshiba Morihei O-Sensei Filmed in 1968 by Mr. Pierre Holzacker at Aikikai Hombu Dojo (Tokyo) Part 1/3: http://youtu.be/gr3Z5r26R2o This film was discovered in Israel in 2014 by Ms. Carole Habib - daughter of Pierre Holzacker - French Air France pilot who practiced Aikido with his wife Esther in France in the 1960'. Pierre and Esther Holzacker were students of the Late Tsuda Itsuo Sensei. © 2014 Masatake Dojo - Israel Aikikai

Publication: Aikido in Japan and The Way Less Traveled
Posted 7/07/2014 11:04am [from Steve Earle]

William Gillespie, 5th dan Aikikai and Dojocho of Beijing Aikikai, has written a provocative and entertaining account of his experiences while training at Hombu Dojo in the late 1990s called "Aikido in Japan and The Way Less Traveled." This book will serve as both an introduction for those who have never been to Hombu to the Hombu experience and as an invitation to those who have been there to look for what they might have missed. Gillespie also gives us his views on topics as diverse as Aikido in an MMA world and the origins of BJJ.

Publication: New Book Of Aikido Stories: A Way to Reconcile the World
Posted 6/20/2014 5:50pm [from Jerry Green]

Editor Quentin Cooke met Robert Frager Sensei, 7th dan, who had studied with O Sensei, the founder of Aikido. Frager Sensei had a wonderful aura of calm and deep wisdom and as they talked about this and that, he said casually ‘It’s such a shame that there is no one out there who is capturing the wonderful stories that arise out of aikido.’ This book contains over 80 aikido stories from everyday life, collected from around the world. . The range of ways and circumstances in which people have used what they have learnt on the mat to deal with whatever life throws at them is simply amazing. Some stories are very short and make a simple point, and others are more profound, but they all serve to inspire and motivate and will serve to entice others to understand the benefits of aikido practice. All proceeds from the book will go to Aiki Extensions, the international charity based in the USA, that seeks to encourage Aikido students to extend the principles they learn on the mat into the world at large, and which undertakes worthy projects using aikido as a tool to help the less fortunate.
