David Goldberg (5th dan, River of Life Dojo, Fort Washington, PA) was in a serious motorcycle accident on June 26 in Pennsylvania and is in the hospital. Seminar: Bill Witt Shihan at Austin Iwama Aikido, Jul 31 - Aug 2, 2015

Bill Witt Shihan (7th Dan), a direct student of both Morihiro Saito as well as the founder of aikido, Morihei Ueshiba, will be conducting a seminar at Austin Iwama Aikido this July 31st through August 2nd. Register by June 30th to take advantage of the reduced $100 early registration fee.

Rick Stickles Sensei Passes Away

USAF News is reporting that Rick Stickles sensei (7th dan, Aikido Schools of New Jersey) has passed away this Sunday, June 21, 2015. According to their report, ASNJ members will be holding a memorial service at their dojo on Wednesday, June 24, at 7pm. Stickles sensei was introduced to aikido shortly after graduating from NYU and became soto deshi under Yoshimitsu Yamada sensei. He founded Aikido Schools of New Jersey in 1977 and created a curriculum called "Sit, Cut, Throw" which incorporates his Dzogchen meditation practice, aiki-ken, and empty-handed aikido practices. He was married with three children. My condolences to his family, friends, students, and loved ones.

Seminar: 17th International Aikido Summer Camp in Poland, Aug 16-22, 2015

Meido Moore Sensei (Shinjinkai in USA, 6th dan), Tomasz Krzyzanowski Sensei (AAI-Polska in Poland, 6th dan) and special guest Urban Aldenklint Shihan (Iyasaka Dojo in Sweden, 7th dan) will instruct this annual friendship event which regularly draws students from up to 10 nations. Weapons, empty-hand and Zen meditation practice will be conducted. The camp fee includes all meals and accomodation. English language flyer here:

Dick Stroud Sensei Passes Away

I have received word that Dick Stroud (6th dan, MIT Aikido Club) passed away this weekend in his sleep while in Japan. Stroud celebrated his 80th birthday and his 40+ years in aikido in 2013 after having taught at the MIT Aikido Club for over 30 years. He was a student of the late Mitsunari Kanai sensei. My condolences go out to his family, friends, students, and loved ones.

Kazuo Chiba Sensei Passes Away

Kazuo Chiba (8th dan, Birankai International) sensei has passed away at age 75. Chiba sensei started aikido in 1958 at age 18 after studying judo and karate. He was uchideshi (live-in disciple) to founder Morihei Ueshiba for seven years. He received his 3rd dan in 1960 and 5th dan in 1962 before being dispatched to Great Britain in 1966. In 1970, he received his 6th dan and shihan title. He moved to San Diego, CA in 1981 on an invitation from the United States Aikido Federation and established the San Diego Aikikai. He founded Birankai International in 2000 before retiring from active aikido teaching in 2008 after 50 years in aikido. My condolences go out to his family, friends, students, and loved ones.

Cleveland Aikikai is pleased to host Wendy Whited Shihan in Cleveland at Cleveland Aikikai Dojo June 5–7 2015. Keiko: Friday June 5, 7-9 p.m., Saturday June 6, 10-12 p.m. and 3-5 p.m., Sunday June 7, 10-1 p.m. Cost $100 for the seminar, or $35 per class. During the seminar there will be shodan, nidan, and sandan examinations. Qualified yudansha candidates from any ASU dojo are invited to test. Please send any applications and paperwork to Jeff Hadley at Cleveland Aikikai no later than May 23rd.
