This article entitled "Still going strong after 10 years, the 'babushkas fight club'" features a Yoshinkan aikido dojo in Siberia, where more than a dozen elderly ladies are celebrating their 10 year anniversary of the dojo. From the article: "'We train with pleasure,' said 77-year-old Svetlana Tyukova, who has already survived a heart attack. 'We've already devoted 10 years to it. I can't just give it up. When we were told we would get a black belt one day, we were laughing and didn't really believe it."

Opening in the heart of San Gabriel Valley, adjacent to the Greater Los Angeles community, Southland Aikido formally reopened its doors on April 7, 2015. Originally founded in the early nineties by Dr. James Graves, it was reestablished in 2015 to promote traditional Aikido to its surrounding communities. Southland Aikido offers traditional Aikido and Iaido instruction. The Southland Aikido dojo is located at 670 Monterey Pass Road, Suite 210, Monterey Park, CA 91754. Salt Lake Aikikai is pleased to welcome Roberto Maruyama Sensei (7th dan) of São Paulo, Brazil, for an Aikido seminar, May 29-31, 2015. Maruyama Sensei is the founder and leader of the Maruyama Institute of Aikido, which has 25 dojos training more than 800 aikidoka across Brazil. He was awarded his 7th degree black belt in January 2015 by the Aikikai Foundation (Hombu Dojo - Tokyo, Japan), the first native Brazilian to receive this rank.

Don Levine Passes Away

I have been informed that Don Levine (4th dan) has passed away. Don started aikido in 1979 and was the founding president of Aiki Extensions, a non-profit organization that networks and supports individuals involved with “off-the-mat” aikido applications. He was also Peter B. Ritzma Professor Emeritus of Sociology and in the College at the University of Chicago. My condolences to his friends, family, and loved ones.
