Yes it appears as if he had to place the leg there. But that's what happens really when some 6 footer gets thrown whilst still holding on to your hand. Having said that, moving his feet isn't as important as his ability to maintain his centerline and the bit after that showed that he can maintain his feet placement the 2nd time around.

Kevin - I think Saito Sensei was showing kihon tenchi nage there. No doubt, he would be able to stay in one position and draw uke to him if he wanted to.
